‘Winchelsea, inspiring visitors year after year’

Winchelsea is an idyllic Sussex town, built on the site of a medieval town from the sea and continues to inspire visitors year after year. People flock to the Ancient Town of Winchelsea to explore its evocative remnants of history, including the Church of St Thomas the Marytr, the three medieval gates that stand guard against old foes and the hidden wine cellars of the old port town of the past.

Seven centuries ago, the new town of Winchelsea was founded by Edward I in 1288 to replace the old Winchelsea, which was lost to the sea in the great storms that sent it beneath the waters of Rye Bay.

Today, almost the entire town is a designated Conservation Area and vast swathes of the surrounding landscape are owned and managed by the National Trust. Many buildings within the town are Grade I or II listed and, together with the many places that are renowned for wining, dining, shopping and relaxing, they serve to enhance the colourful, cultural appeal of Winchelsea.
