‘The historic landscapes of Hassocks’

With roots stretching back to around 20,000 years ago in the Stone Age and, much later, a Roman colony, the large village of Hassocks of today offers much for visitors to see and do.

The village’s name is said to be derived from the tufts of grass found in its surrounding fields, so it’s unsurprising that the landscape is such a dominant feature of a community that’s set close to the South Downs. The Clayton to Offham Escarpment, which extends as far as Lewes, is a Site of Special Scientific Interest due to its rare chalk grassland habitat, its woodland and scrub while two windmills, the Clayton Windmills, mark the village skyline.

Hassocks has a variety of shops at its centre, including several specialist shops, a long established delicatessen and other traditional retailers as well as cafes, restaurants and a popular community centre, Adastra Hall, where numerous events are held throughout the year.

Hidden Britain’s Hassocks

Hidden Britain is a community-focussed, not-for-profit organisation, dedicated to helping businesses, residents, community groups and local authorities come together to develop the tourism potential within their community.

We worked with the people who want to share what they love about Hassocks and helped them develop an effective business and marketing strategy that would attract visitors to their village and share the experiences they enjoy here with others.
