‘The most delightful village in the world.’Renowned 18th century journalist and radical politician, William Cobbett described Botley as ‘the most delightful village in the world’ and made his home in the historic village that would lay a memorial stone to him in the square when he died. Botley sits on the upper reaches of the River Hamble, where the community grew around a ford that served as a crossing point for travellers from nearby villages who had to stay overnight in the village’s coaching inns during high tide. The River Hamble also powered the flour mill, an industry that endured here for over 1000 years and was noted in the Domesday Survey of 1086. Today, Botley retains a characteristic charm and vibrant community spirit that is evident throughout this picturesque village from the fine restaurants and pubs to the traditional shops that line the square. Surrounding the village lie beautiful countryside, scenic walks, tranquil rivers and self-guided trails that include Manor Farm and Country Park’s 400 acres of woodland. It’s no surprise that Botley attracts visitors who enjoy the village’s refreshing unspoilt charm and landscape throughout the year.
