' The finest street of Georgian buildings in the county ...’

Ashbourne is one of Derbyshire’s finest old market town’s, combining a medieval street pattern and historic buildings with a wealth of high quality shops.  Lying in a lovely green valley on the southern edge of the Peak District the town attracts many visitors, who come to enjoy a scene which has changed little in appearance since the 18th century.  The cobbled market place, hidden alleys and yards are a delight to explore, and the wide and elegant Church Street is considered to be the finest street of Georgian buildings in Derbyshire.

The town became a busy and fashionable social centre for the wealthy during the Georgian period, with six coaching roads meeting here, including the route from London to Carlisle.  The legacy of over 200 listing buildings, fine coaching inns and mellow town houses combine to create a unique atmosphere.

Significant persons with a connection to the town include Izaak Walton, Dr Johnson, George Elliot and Prince Charles Edward Stuart (Bonny Prince Charlie)

History at your fingertips...
A stroll down the main street takes you past historic almshouses, the 16th century Old Grammar School and the Mansion where Dr Johnson visited his friend Dr Taylor.  Pause awhile to visit the lovely parish church of St Oswald, with its graceful 212ft spire, or follow the Heritage Trail around the town, and reward yourself afterwards with a visit to one of the many traditional tearooms!

Enjoyable Shopping…
Ashbourne is renowned for its independent ladies boutiques, antique shops, bistros and speciality food shops.  Clustered around the historic market place and along the main street of the town they offer a delightful shopping experience.  The markets still take place – every Thursday and Saturday throughout the year continuing a long traditional dating back to 1257 when the town was granted a charter to allow stalls in the market place.

Food and Drink
A wide range of high quality independent food shops ranging from small bistros and cafes to intimate, award winning restaurants, all serving local produce from Derbyshire. Delicatessens offer speciality cheeses, chocolates, cakes and pastries, whilst traditional butchers and a fishmonger complete the traditional historic market town street scene.
